SKILLED WORKER VISA

UK Skilled Worker Visa: Overview & Eligibility

The Skilled Worker visa is the primary immigration route for non-UK and Irish nationals seeking to work in the UK. Launched on 1 December 2020 to replace the Tier 2 (General) route, it allows UK businesses with a valid Home Office sponsor licence to recruit international talent for eligible skilled roles.

Key Requirements

  • Job Offer: A confirmed, eligible job offer from a Home Office-licensed UK employer.

  • Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS): A valid CoS reference number issued by your sponsor.

  • Skill & Salary Thresholds: The role must meet the relevant skill level (RQF Level 6 or eligible transitional categories) and minimum salary requirements.

  • English Language: Demonstrated proficiency in English (at least CEFR Level B1).

  • Financial Maintenance: Sufficient personal savings to support yourself upon arrival, unless certified by your sponsor.

Bringing Family Members (Dependant Restrictions)

While successful applicants can traditionally bring their partners and eligible children, dependant rules are subject to specific restrictions:

  • Care Workers: Care workers and senior care workers (SOC codes 6135 and 6136) are strictly prohibited from bringing family dependants, unless they entered the route prior to 11 March 2024 with continuous status.

  • Skill Level Criteria: Dependant sponsorship generally applies to roles qualifying at degree level (RQF 6 and above), with transitional provisions protecting those already sponsored under previous guidelines.

  • Financial & Relationship Proof: Eligible family members must provide evidence of genuine relationship status and meet individual maintenance funds.
