BRITISH CITIZENSHIP

British Citizenship : Naturalisation

A foreign national aged 18 years or over living in the UK with Settled Status can apply to become a British citizen.   The process to attain British citizenship by a person aged 18 and over is called naturalisation.

The rules which determine the eligibility for naturalisation as a British citizen are strict and vary depending on an applicant's circumstances. For example, an applicant who is married to, or in a civil partnership with a British citizen will need satisfy slightly different requirements, in contrast with an applicant who is neither married to, nor in a civil partnership with a British citizen.

In general an applicant seeking to naturalise will need to:

  • be 18 years old or over
  • be of “good character”
  • have an intention to continue to live in the UK
  • meet the knowledge of English and life in the UK requirements
  • meet the residency requirement

If an applicant decides to apply, it is important to meet all the relevant requirements and to support his or her application with documentation that shows that the requirements for naturalisation are met. Failure to do so will result in refusal of their application and loss of the application fee as it is not refunded.

British Citizenship : Registration

A child under the age of 18 years old can obtain British citizenship through registration. There are several routes in which the process of registration can be pursued.

The most common route for registration are made on the basis of section 1 of the British Nationality Act 1981.This route is primarily for those children born in the United Kingdom  on or after 1 January 1983.

The other route is through section 3 of the British Nationality Act 1981. This primarily for children born outside the United Kingdom.
